Everyone feels sad sometimes. Depression is different—it tends to stick around and affect daily life. It can show up as low energy, loss of interest, sleep/appetite changes, numbness, or hopelessness.
Signs it may be more than sadness
Symptoms lasting 2+ weeks
Difficulty getting through school/work/home responsibilities
Withdrawing from people or activities
Feeling numb, empty, or “checked out”
A small step that can help: the 10-minute starter
Depression often says “do nothing.” A gentle way to push back is to choose one 10-minute starter step—then stop if you need to. Examples: shower, step outside, load dishes, short walk, or text a friend. Starting counts.
How to support someone with depression
Presence beats perfect words. Try: “I’m here.” “Do you want company, help, or quiet support?” Avoid pep talks like “Just think positive.”
