Anxiety isn’t just “overthinking.” It’s your body’s alarm system. When it goes off, you might notice a racing heart, tight chest, stomach flips, restlessness, or trouble focusing. These sensations are real—and they can be managed.
What anxiety is trying to do
Anxiety is designed to protect you. The problem is that the alarm can become overly sensitive—going off even when you’re not in immediate danger. The goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety completely; it’s to respond to it in a way that helps your body settle.
A quick skill: box breathing
Box breathing is a simple way to signal safety to your nervous system:
Inhale for 4
Hold for 4
Exhale for 4
Hold for 4
Repeat for 4 rounds. Many people find it helpful before a hard conversation, before bed, or when their body feels keyed up.
Support without feeding the reassurance loop
If you’re supporting someone with anxiety, constant reassurance can accidentally keep the cycle going. A helpful alternative is validation + a body-based question: “I can see this feels scary. What would help your body feel safer right now?”
